Understanding the Psychology of Riots

Posted: June 10, 2020
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Acceptance Speech, on the occasion of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, December 10, 1964). It is being called the … Read

Tips from Modern Psychology for Coping with Corona’s Isolation and Anxiety

Posted: April 21, 2020
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

No one anticipated last Easter that we would be home, a year later, involuntarily missing the Holy Week services; nor were countless parents prepared to be ‘homeschooling’ their children, albeit with some heroic efforts by educators to support the task … Read

Coronavirus and the Ethics of Stockpiling

Posted: March 13, 2020
By: R. J. Snell, Ph.D.

Given the spread of COVID-19, it’s unsurprising that people are stocking their pantries and closets with food and medication, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. Supply chain disruption has already resulted in shortages of some drugs and medicines with … Read

An Open Appeal to the Catholic Bishops of the World

Posted: March 19, 2018
By: E. Christian Brugger, D.Phil.

COMMENTARY: Only fraternal episcopal interventions can now hope to avert what is sure otherwise to be a spiritual catastrophe for the Catholic Church. Read

Does Following Our Conscience Make Something Right?

Posted: February 20, 2018
By: E. Christian Brugger, D.Phil.

The allied judges at Nuremburg had little sympathy for the reply, “I was just following orders.” What if the defendants had said, “I was just following my conscience?” Would that have made a difference? Would it have made what they did right? We often treat an appeal to conscience as a justification for our behavior. Does conscience really justify? Read

Natural Law for Dummies – Part II

Posted: January 31, 2018
By: E. Christian Brugger, D.Phil.

My description of the natural law in Part I as the naturally knowable law of right and wrong is likely to prompt an objection. How can the idea of a moral law known to all people square with the undeniable fact of widespread moral disagreement between sincere and thoughtful people? If everyone can know, for example, that sex is right and good and humanly fulfilling only in marriage, why do so many people seem not to know it? Read

Natural Law For Dummies – Part I

Posted: January 26, 2018
By: E. Christian Brugger, D.Phil.

Western ethical tradition, as far back as Aristotle and even further, has acknowledged that moral truth exists; that its existence does not depend upon the customs or opinions of individuals or groups; that people can know it exists and so know the difference between right and wrong; that its knowability is, as it were, part of the order of the universe; and that all people are bound to obedience to this natural moral order, even if their obedience causes them rejection, suffering and even death. Why Not Pot?

Posted: December 21, 2017
By: E. Christian Brugger, D.Phil.

Now that recreational pot smoking is legal in seven states and the District of Columbia (and for medical and pseudo-medical reasons in twenty more), many good people are wondering, why not pot? You can eat it, vape it, mook it, dab it, tinc it, and rub it. Everyone is doing it to relax, stir creativity and awaken their libido. Why the heck not join in? Read

The Giving Season: Are We Getting It Right?

Posted: December 19, 2017
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

Amidst the frenetic gift buying of the season, my seven-year-old daughter recently asked a rather obvious question: “If it is Jesus’ birthday, why are we giving gifts to each other and not to Jesus?” Explaining our actions as the imitation of the giving shown by the three wise men, or by reflecting on how giving to others demonstrates our gratitude for the love we have received, only gets us so far…. Death Is Not Comfortable

Posted: October 10, 2017
By: Frank J. Moncher, Ph.D.

Researchers have recently suggested that it would be helpful for those experiencing terminal illness to interface with a computer in order to establish funeral plans, wills and even discuss spiritual matters. The underlying premise is that discussions with actual people might be uncomfortable for a variety of reasons. While no one would suggest that terminally-ill persons should take on additional burdens, perhaps the goal of avoiding discomfort during such an intense and disturbing time is not on point. Death is not comfortable. Read
